What's the difference between AEO and SEO?

By Jason Burns, Founder of HurcuLeads · Stuff Doer at Adolicious · Updated

SEO ranks a page in a list of results; AEO gets the page cited inside a synthesized answer — same crawl foundation, different measurement, different structured-data emphasis, and a different set of engines that decide who wins.

Both disciplines start from the same technical base: crawlable HTML, a valid sitemap, a stable canonical URL, and content that follows Google's guidance on helpful, people-first content. Skip that base and neither discipline works.

They diverge at three points. First, measurement — SEO tracks impressions and clicks in Google Search Console; AEO tracks citations inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude, none of which currently provide a Search-Console-equivalent. Second, structured data — SEO uses Article, BreadcrumbList, and product/review types to earn rich results; AEO leans hardest on QAPage, DefinedTerm, and a fully-linked entity graph so the model can name your organization and author with confidence.

Third, distribution — SEO waits for Googlebot's next crawl; AEO uses IndexNow to push URLs to Bing (and therefore ChatGPT Search) within minutes, and structures content so a single quotable sentence sits under each H2.

The practical rule: keep doing SEO. Add the AEO layer on top. The overlap is large, and the engines that decide AI citations are increasingly the same engines that decide search rankings.

  • What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of engineering web content, structured data, and entity signals so that generative answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude — retrieve, cite, and correctly attribute a specific source.

  • How do AI assistants choose which sources to cite?

Grounded AI assistants choose sources by running a retrieval query against a search index, ranking the returned pages using traditional relevance and authority signals, and then having the model select the passages it can quote with the highest attribution confidence.

  • What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping content so large-language-model answer engines quote it verbatim inside their generated responses — a sibling discipline to AEO that focuses on the phrasing, structure, and evidence patterns that models prefer to lift.

  • How do I get cited by Google AI Overviews?

Get cited by Google AI Overviews the same way you earn any Google organic feature: publish helpful, people-first content on a crawlable, canonical URL with valid structured data, and rank well enough on the underlying query that Google's generative layer pulls your page into the source strip.
